June 6th 1944, Normandy. The photographer seems to be part of the LCVP landing craft crew rather than the soldiers actually taking the beachheads, and hence would most possibly be a britisher, because a LCVP unit's landing locations were top secret, and given to only a a few units in England. The landing in the pictures is Omaha beach, the one with lesser bodycount as compared to Utah beach (as portrayed in the opening minutes of Saving Private Ryan)
